This hair restoration patient is a 67 year old, Caucasian male, Norwood class V, with salt and pepper wavy hair, good density and scalp laxity. He has receding frontotemporal hairline with extensive thinning in the midscalp and crown region, the total balding area measured 142 cm2. The patient also has a curvilinear forehead lift scar and desires to reconstruct both temples, measured 14 cm2.
The Ultra refined follicular unit transplantation with 3,530 Follicular unit grafts bearing 6,755 hairs was performed. The grafts were placed in the frontal to posterior midscalp region: 1 hair graft – 635 grafts (635 hair), 2 hair graft – 2,565 grafts (5130 hair), 3 hair graft – 330 grafts (990 hair).
The Temples were also reconstructed: 1 hair graft – 150 in left and 150 in right side, 2 hair graft – 120 in left and 120 in right side.
He started taking Finasteride 1 mg daily 5 months after hair transplantation.
The patient followed up at 1 year with significant cosmetic improvement.
Bald class
Norwood stage 5
Occurs when the connecting bridge of hair disappears leaving a single large bald area on the front and top of the scalp. The hair on the sides of the scalp remains relatively high.
